First Lady Michelle Obama announces plans to support Military Families

May 21, 2010 3:30 AM

May 12, 2010: Announced by First Lady Michelle Obama, the President has ordered a new initiative to find priorities and partnerships to help military families.

“As America asks more of these families, they have a right to expect more of us. This is our moral obligation,” Mrs. Obama said of the nation’s military families. “It is also a matter of national security. The readiness of our armed forces depends on the readiness of our military families.”

The first lady recognized that many groups are making tremendous efforts to help military families, but it isn’t enough. “Even with all this generosity and goodwill, many families are still not receiving all the support that they need….too many families still struggle to access the benefits and the assistance...”

In the next 90 days, this presidential initiative will involve multiple government agencies along with the offices of the First Lady, Vice President, and Dr. Jill Biden. The goal is to find successful ways to help military families and to partner with programs that work.

1.7 million American children and youth under age 18 have a parent serving in the military. Most of these parents will be deployed two or more times. For our troops, the effects of multiple tours are stress, anxiety, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI), marked by nightmares, flashbacks, angry outbursts, insomnia and social withdrawal.

These symptoms ripple through family life, making it hard for families to reconnect after all this separation.

The only thing that holds Project Sanctuary back from helping more families is funding. Right now, there is no government funding available to help military families in this way.

Urge your politicians to support Project Sanctuary and join others in your financial support. Don’t miss this opportunity to tell them about the work of Project Sanctuary, especially in the next 90 days during this Presidentially ordered initiative to research ways to help and programs that work.

I am interested in helping out. I used to work for Army Community Services, Family Advocacy Program in Ft. Buchanan, Puerto Rico. I currently work as a HS counselor. Is there a need for volunteers?
