Myth Busters – the truth about military life and Project Sanctuary
MYTH: Sam’s Club and that other warehouse store that starts with “C” are pretty much the same place.
TRUTH: We spend thousands of dollars at these stores for food for our retreats. We are happy to report that Sam’s Club definitely comes out ahead. 1. Sam’s Club, Southlands Mall, generously gave significant cash donations (that other store had very limited resources for community donations). 2. We can fax our order to Sam’s club and it is ready and waiting for us when we get there. 3. Sam’s club employees helped us load our trailer. 4. Sam’s Club sent us volunteers to help manage the kitchen at the last retreat (and they were awesome cooks too!) 5. Prices were about the same, but the service far outpaced that other store. Thank you Sam’s Club!
MYTH: Military pay is very good.
TRUTH: The average enlisted US Army Sergeant makes about $23,000 per year* plus benefits including health insurance, 401k and some housing costs. While this may seem like lots for someone right out of high school, it isn’t very much for a parent with a spouse and a couple of kids to feed. *Source: salary.com.
MYTH: Project Sanctuary receives funding from the government.
TRUTH: Even though the Department of Defense has made some very good initiatives to help military families, there are no government grant opportunities for what Project Sanctuary does! While many programs exist to help our troops, or spouses, or children, none exist to help the family unit as a whole.
MYTH: Join the military, see the world.
TRUTH: These old recruitment advertisements that we may remember from the 1980’s make military service seem glamorous. Our servicemen and women make tremendous sacrifices as they are stationed in many remote bases all around the globe, many are very far away from basic services. We are grateful that they, and their families, are willing to make such enormous sacrifices.
MYTH: What is so special about military wives? husbands? children? The government takes care of them too.
TRUTH: One military spouse said it best when her husband was deployed again for 15 more months: “I am celibate for your freedom.”
MYTH: Why should we do something special for our military families? They signed up for this; they knew what they were getting into.
TRUTH: There is so much honor in military life. We thank our heroes (including their families) every day for their enormous sacrifices. A five night, all-expenses-paid, therapeutic retreat to help them cope with the stress of it all is just the beginning. We then follow these families for 2 years, making sure they have the support and services they need to be successful.
THANK YOU, Military families!
